How did this all start?
Life is full of seasons, sunrises and sunsets! We are a seed planted and and take up root in the location we are born. Some of us may stay rooted for life in one spot and many others, shift and take in new locations and adventures. If you’re reading this, Thank you for liking my page.
Today, I want to share how my evolution into a health and wellness advocate/coach emerged.
Growing up, My sister and I were the children of a Vietnam Vet with OCD, PTSD and other anguishing mental health issues stemming from the war, and a mother who has the biggest heart and tried her best to keep things streamlined and normal for us.
Funny thing was, nothing felt normal, because of the PSTD and OCD, we moved 27 times before I was 18, we lived pay check to pay check, our Dad displayed intense OCD routines which we joked about back then, but they were shaping our perspective on life.
There are so many details I could go on and on about, but I want to call out the key aspects that molded me into my future self.
My parents, all though we struggled, filled life with adventure, the great outdoors and hiking and exploring. My Dad was a Buddhist and followed the guidance of the spiritual Native Americans, my Mom grew up Christian Science, I self directed myself to grow up Lutheran, and my sister simply did her own thing. This gave me open minded perspective that there is not one set of faith to believe in and guide your life. This was the building blocks of knowing that faith will lead the way if you believe in something. We grew up eating healthy, fueling our body for exercise and getting the nutrients needed to carry us along. Our Dad and Mom were health fanatics back in the day and they taught us about protein, ACV, drinking aloe Vera for many reasons and an abundance of other herbs and foods.
Fast forward to my junior year in highschool and Jan 6, 1994 we discovered my Dad had developed brain and lung cancer due to Agent Orange. This was a defoliant used during Vietnam to kill all the foliage. It did way more than that killing 1,000’s of soldiers and in recent years is now linked to passing on issues and disease to at least 5 generations.
My Dad was told he had 2 weeks to live, our worlds flipped upside down. He went on to make it 18 months and passed away on Fathers Day June 18,1995. This was 5 days after Highschool graduation. I 100% believe he outlived the Doctors prognosis by continuing to live life working out, eating macrobiotic diet, taking supplements, herbs, and chanting daily. He kicked ass and that set the stage for my mantra in life. I decided to start college any way and focus on an environmental policy degree. Agent Orange was developed by Dow chemical a subsidiary of Monsanto and I dug into the background of how chemicals affect our bodies and change our life. I wanted to go into policy and hold companies accountable. This degree of study continued to solidify how I wanted to live my life. I remember being 20 years old and being asked why I make so many health conscious decisions, they would say we’re all going to die someday, so why not indulge while your living so you enjoy yourself, my mantra has always been I want to feel good and enjoy life by doing things and having amazing experiences. Perspectives change when you watch your Dad die a slow death, but he was determined to feel as good as he could until the end.
Working out, running and staying with soccer was all I could do to work through my pain and sorrow and keep going.
Fast forward 10 years later and trying to get pregnant, it wasn’t happening. We encountered a lot of life stress at that stage in Derek and my life, we had started moving around the country for my job and didn’t have a great routine going for healthy eating and working out when we moved to Philly. We gained weight and didn’t feel great. Once we moved to Phoenix, things changed and we began to workout and eat healthy again. Huge changes started to occur and after four years of trying at age 29, I was finally able to get pregnant. The moment life introduced our beautiful daughter Taylor to us, things began to rapidly change in products we were using, it was at this time I started to research and understand that some products were chemically detrimental to our health and well being. I took a deep dive and heavily researched products we could use in our daily routines and the more I researched the more I began to uncover many questionable products. A few years later, we excitedly added Casey to our family and I was a fierce Mama bear at this point to keep my family safe and healthy. Over the next several years we continued to overhaul our home to be more eco and health safe. When Taylor turned 3, I received a call at work from daycare stating that Taylor was unresponsive during nap time after suffering a shaking episode. I flew down hwy 494 at 100 miles an hour until I arrived to find our daughter limp and unresponsive. Holy crap, there was no way I was going to lose our daughter who we had fought so hard to have. We rushed to Children’s hospital in an ambulance and later discovered she had a seizure. We went on to have more testing and later discovered she had epilepsy. We were devastated. This happened a few weeks after her MMR boosters, other than that, there’s no real reason we know as to why she got epilepsy.
Times goes on and we discovered Taylor also has EBD (Emotional Behavioral disorder) as a result of her epilepsy. People with epilepsy are 5x more likely to have EBD, anxiety, depression and impulsiveness. We want answers so we go to Mayo and work with their neurologist and psychologist to really map out and understand what we were dealing with. Taylor’s actions starting to reflect some of the of the symptoms of EBD and impulsiveness so we began working with therapists, OTs and our neurologist. We decided to take food as our pathway and mindfulness training and tools to help treat Taylor’s seizures and help keep her actions in check. We wanted to balance out her system to help manage the core reasons of why her mind was misfiring. This has been an incredibly amazing journey and I have done years and years of extensive research to help understand, support and advocate for Taylor. Over the last 10 years, Derek has been dealing with choking on food and until last year, we could not figure out the why. We worked with a nutrition response doctor and discovered he’s allergic to dairy. He was still choking, we found a new more holistic doctor that ran a full blood panel, allergy and sensitivity test and we discovered that he’s allergic to nuts, dairy, gluten and sea food, and a few other things. We also went to an ENT and confirmed he has EOE that has been shrinking his esophagus due to the allergies. The diet adjustments have made great changes and reduced the choking, but it’s a work in progress. In the last few years, I started struggling with heavy periods that became worse and worse. My stomach began to grow and get in the way of working out, it then became a painful experience and this October at my physical I finally figured out I had adenomyosis and my uterus would need to be removed via a hysterectomy. In December, I had surgery to remove everything except my ovaries. 9 weeks into recovery I’m continuing to navigate the healing process, and through this journey I’m piecing together extremely important people helping me in my recovery so that I heal the correct way to avoid issues in the future. This my friends, was my epiphany, my passion is health and wellness. I’ve been coaching sports for the last 25 years and this is what drives me and makes me so happy.
